Another day, another list. We made it through 2020 and we’re back with a list of 10 rising rising Korean artists that you really should know. Just like our previous one, this list is meant to shine a light on artists that you may not have heard of, but definitely should be following.
At Choose KHiphop, we aim to help out independent and lesser known artists by connecting them to a new audience through reviews, interviews, and much more. It’s our main goal for this website and it’s something that all of us are incredibly passionate about. So without further ado, let’s jump right in.
Cloudybay is a singer/rapper with a unique, husky voice. “Cloudy” is actually a great way to describe her music. Her album “cloudybayfy” came out in April 2020 and is perfect for whenever you need a vibe check. It features artists Keemhyoeun, Ash Island, and Meloh. She also has some great tracks on SoundCloud that are worth checking out. A personal favorite of mine is “NahNah” which I’ll link down below.
DNYDK is a Seoul-based r&b singer. He has a deep, dreamy voice, and the only suitable word I can think to come up with his music is: comforting. There’s a breezy, dream-like quality to his songs that’s hard not to like. “hawaii in seoul” and “Pass Seat” are personal favorites.
Back in November 2020, LIPNINE released his debut EP “SKETCH : footprint.” This EP is cohesive, vibey, and beautifully produced. It also features some familiar names. Pullik and Ja Mezz both appear on this album. LIPNINE also has music on SoundCloud, including a remix of a song from Bobby’s newest album. This young man has loads of talent and potential, so make sure to keep an eye on him.
7. Loxx Punkman
Loxx Punkman is a rapper who’s worked with many artists such as Khundi Panda, Bassagong, TOMSSON, Dsel, and many more. Back in 2016 he won the 2016 Street Rap Shit Competition. His work is a little on the experimental side, but his flows are hard-hitting and fiery. His latest single “108 Afflictions” was released back in October, and we hope to hear more from him very soon.
Hyo3 is one of my newest discoveries and his debut EP “DONT LOOK BACK, LOOK FORWARD” was insanely impressive, especially for a newcomer. He’s a gifted producer based out of LA, and his mission is one that’s close to our hearts as well! While he wants to make a name for himself, he also works with up and coming artists to help bring their talents to the spotlight internationally. We’ll also be working with Hyo3 in the future, so stay tuned!
5. 릴피쉬 Lil FISH
Lil FISH is a member of the indie band We Are The Night, but he’s also released a solo album titled Schizophrenia. This album explores a variety of genres, but what impressed me the most was his ability to completely flip a song into something unexpected. I never knew when one song ended and the next began. This album was also composed, arranged, and produced by the artist, which is a testament to his skill – this is what makes Lil FISH an artist you need to have on your radar.
If you read the previous list you’ll be familiar with this name. I was so incredibly impressed with his latest album NON-FICTION that I still frequently listen to it. It’s a huge step up from his previous works and I think that the experimental/industrial sound suits him quite well. He features artists Queen WA$ABII, viceversa, Sikboy, and many more.
I first heard of Necta through the song she did with Mckdaddy “By Your Neck” and I was instantly intrigued. Her voice reminded me of BiBi, since they have a similar tone, but Necta’s music is much darker and edgier, thanks in part to producer Weissen. The team and I are huge fans of this girl, and we talk about her in our upcoming KR&B podcast episode, so don’t miss it!
2. UNDER SEONGSU BRIDGE
This group released their brand new self-titled album on January 25th, 2021. If you’re looking for some great modern hip hop, look no further. Paloalto is actually a big fan of these guys, and for good reason. He features on not one, but two tracks on their album. Although new, they’re making big waves in the scene already, so definitely keep tabs on them.
Finally, coming in at number 1 on our list is Tabber. I’m sure many of you have heard of him already from his debut EP “Deep End Mix Tape,” which we previously reviewed. This EP is a trip through a dark fantasy world, nightmarish at times, but beautiful nonetheless. It also features an A-list roster of features, such as Dean, Kim Ximya, and more.
So that’s our list of 10 rising Korean artists you should know. We hope you enjoyed it, and we hope you’ll discover some of your new favorite artists. Leave us a comment with your thoughts!
